Dell, Gateway, and Acer seem to be good. But I don't recommend eMachines to anyone! They are junk... That's the #1 computer needing hardware repairs in my local area.

Also, it's cheaper to buy from Dell, Gateway, etc. than to build your own. The cost of Windows alone bought separately is near the cost of a new PC. Unless you are going with Linux for an OS, buy a pre-built system.

This may not be for you, but I personally hate the idea of buying a computer that will last a couple of years and then throwing it away to buy another whole computer. Building your own is really not that hard and there are forums full of people waiting to answer your questions.

You can build your own computer yourself for under $500 if you are NOT looking for the newest and latest of everything. You won't be getting a huge hard drive or a DVD burner or the newest CPU - but you can make a reliable machine with quality parts that will run most software - especially if you already own the most expesive part - a copy of Windows XP.

The real advantage here is that it will be upgradable in the future. Many computer builders (Dell) use cheap no-name parts that are not compatable with anything else out there and cannot be upgraded.

You just have to ask yourself if you are willing to learn to put it together yourself and read the reviews. I would suggest www.newegg.com to buy parts, read reviews, etc.

Just pick a low end Antec case w/ power supply, a motherboard from Asus, MSI, or Abit using an older style CPU (maybe Intel Socket 478 or AMD socket 939) and a moderate speed CPU (2.8 / 2800) and the RAM that matches.

You will get a nice computer that you will be able to upgrade one piece at a time over the years so you never have to scrap the whole computer ever again.

If you don't want to upgrade and keep it stock, go with Dell. They tend to change some of the wiring to make it difficult to do your own upgrades.
My eMachine has been bullet proof. I've done some upgrades and I can play Battlefield 2 without any issues.
If you don't know, BF2 is VERY demanding.

your better off buying a computer at a yard sale and overhauling it yourself. I bought a compaq tower and spent about 200 dollars in upgrades and now have a fast good pc for under 300 dollars

cheapest way would be to build your own computer. brand names mean nothing, it's the guts that matter.
