Styrofoam is made of the left overs of crude oil(petroleum) after gasoline has been refined out of it....so you are basically burning really dirty gasoline when you burn styrofoam

Polystyrene foam can release CFCs (chloroflourocarbons) which slowly drift up to the ozone layer and combine with the O3 atoms there, destroying them for all time. Newer styrofoam uses different materials to minimize the CFC release, but they aren't perfect.

the chemicals released in the combustion process are bad for the ozone layer as they contain some residual hydro-flouro-carbons. Besides every little bit either hurts or harms breathable air.
