Did the satellite COBE (Cosmic Background Explorer) orbit around earth only or go further out?

It orbited the Earth. It's telescope was trained just about everywhere *except* the Earth below it, and the sun.

COBE was placed in Earth orbit where it remains today. It's altitude is put at 900 km in what's called a 'geo-synchronous' orbit.
