I think it may make them respect you. I'm not sure, but it is possible that someone standing up to them may scare them. They get so used to people backing away from them and fearing them that they may be caught off guard if you actually stand up to them. Bullies are just weak, people with low self esteem and I think more people should stand up to them and show them they can't bully everybody around. One day they will meet their match and get the lesson they deserve.

Umm, it might and it might not. I think that tolerating any bulli-ness (if such a word even exists) is horrible and no-one should have to go through it; but do I think that standing up to one can make them fear you? Definitely not from the first time, you have to establish yourself, make it clear that you won't accept being bullied any longer and they (the bullies) have to believe that. It might backfire the first time, but if you keep on doing it and showing them that such a behavior is not allowable, then they'll back off eventually. Unfortunately, I haven't tested that theory, I was bullied when I was in high school, but I just brushed it aside...it was more emotional than it was physical and I didn't mind. I just turned my cheek the other way and ignored them.
If you feel like you've had enough, then talk to a teacher and let them help you tackle that problem. If not, and you want to stand up to them, then just be careful. I'm all for anti-bullies, so if you start a group with a bunch of friends, where if one of you guys was ever bullied then everyone else in that group with gather round and make sure that they make their point clear, no bullies can be tolerated. That way, if you do want to stand up to them, you'll have someone to cover your back. Power lies in numbers, besides bullies are usually insecure beings who think that by picking on other people it helps them feel strong. They just try to hide their misery by taking it out on others which very much proves that they indeed lack any strength whatsoever.

I think so. I've found that most bullies are that way to make themselves feel better, and to make themselves look better than everyone else, when they secretly don't have a real high opinion of themselves. I was bullied all through school by one girl, until my sophomore year. She heard I'd called her a "b*tch," which I had, and came after me. I'd had enough, so when she came into the classroom to beat me up, I turned around, sat on the table I'd been sitting at, and mule-kicked her square in the stomach. The teacher came in the room as she came for me, so she left me alone, and never bothered me again. She'd found out I wasn't as easy a target anymore.

Look around for the biggest bully with the biggest mouth and that's the one you head for and just slap the poo-poo out of them, the rest will then steer clear.

of course! bullies only go for the weaker ones or coz they know they can. if you do stand up, they'll decide to go for easier prey instead.
