An overtightened power steering belt can cause it to crack eventually when it dries out. That overtightened belt can also cause the bearings inside your power steering pump to wear prematurely. The belt's life will be shortened too. The best thing to do is tighten the belt in stages. Put a new one on just tight enough so it doesn't squeek and loose enough to prevent bearing wear. When in doubt go to a parts store and buy a tension guage. They are pretty cheap and will give you piece of mind. Good luck.

No, not really. It will crack when it dries out and gets old.
What the overtight belt will do is to wear parts faster and could cause the bearings in your power steering pump to wear and may cause leaks and having to replace the pump. Good luck and get a new belt and don't overtighten.

overtight can make it split, being dry and old can make it crack. Either way if it is cracked it should be changed before it break and causes damage.
