Not that you have the quote wrong, but it seems to me the quote should be the other way around.

"practice without theory, like route without map, is blind; theory without practice, like Map without route, is empty".

"practice without theory, like route without map, is blind;"

Meaning: one blindly follows a discipline(practice/route) without a framework(theory/map) as a standard of measure for understanding when or why the (practice/route) has been successfully developed or utilized.

and

"theory without practice, like Map without route, is empty"

Meaning: Theorizing without ever putting the theory to test, into practice. Is like having a map you never follow or put into use in taking the route to a place you are merely dreaming of arriving at. A goal only imagined which you never attempt to acheive.

Are you sure you don't mean: practice without theory, like A ROUTE without A MAP, is blind; theory without practice, like A MAP without A ROUTE, is empty"? Because that would make more sense.

Setting out to do something without setting any guidelines or expectations for yourself is like trying to get somewhere without a map - It just results in aimless wandering.

Setting guidelines and expectations about something without putting it into practice yourself is like staring at a map with nowhere to go - There's no point.

"practice without theory, like map without route, is blind;

If you don't have an idea as to why something is happening, you are probably wasting your time. You need some type of idea.

theory without practice, like route without map, is empty".

If you have a theory, you should work to find out if it true because a theory means nothing unless you work on proving it.

It means

to corelate theory and practice we must buy the map and walk around the route with the map we bbought.

and to buy the cheapest map and to find the shortest route , we must read this quote over and over again until we get numb.

understand ?

The first part, you need to have a theory to tell you what direction to go in. It gives focus. But, if you don't actually do anything, then all a theory is, is words that are meaningless. A person must come up with a theory and then prove it. It's much like the quote "Without evidence, your opinion is worthless"

It means practice and theory go hand-in-hand. One involves thinking and the other involves doing. Let's take the Empire State Building as an example. Did they just start building it one day? No -- they had a plan. They thought about it before they did it. But think about that plan for a minute: Did they just make one up? No -- they took the knowledge that people had amassed after years of putting up skyscrapers and applied it. They not only knew what to do, they also knew what NOT to do.

BOTTOM LINE: Before you start doing something, you need to have at least some idea of what you're doing, so you need to think about it. But you can't stop at thinking about it either. You need to figure out if what you think is the right way to do something really IS the right way to do something.

Make sense?

In the movie "Waking Life," there is a crazy old man dangling from a light pole refusing help and giving no reason for what he's doing. These four young, babbling intellectuals see him and make derogatory remarks, until one of them says "He's all action and no theory. We're no better, we're all theory and no action." They're sitting around examining life and not doing anything about it.

Putting ideas into action for no reason is madness and destructive, but sitting around deliberating about why we should or should not do something makes us stuck.

in order to have a theory you must first have an understanding about a topic so thats where the experience from practice comes in to play.
