It depends on how small your area is. Tomatoes take up a lot of room. Potatoes as well, in ground. You can do a container garden if you want. Love these! This allows you to do tomatoes but you have to be aware of what variety you choose. I would suggest going to a nursery and talking to someone there. Tell them how much space you have and ask them for ideas. You don't have to buy your plants there but they can give you a good idea of what to do.

Just stay away from vine plants (although some that can be grown vertically on a trellis, such as some cucumbers can work) and keep to the ones you know you'll use most. For me, that is green beans, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, onions, lettuce, and a few herbs.
