Koi and goldfish are hearty fish and withstand temperatures extreams below freezing to 108F which is why they make such wonderful pond fish. (That isn't to say 108 is the temperature they need to be at all the time) Also, pond water will be warmer at the surface than at the deeper levels of the pools. During ice over, koi go into a form of hybernation. this allows the fish to survive the cold temperatures. Theydon't need to eat for months. Goldfish are the same way provided they did not hit hybernation with food rotting in their intestines.

Waterfalls and fountains also lead to the cooling of the water so even a pool in direct sun has cool spots. Night time and clouds also give the water a change to exchange heat so the fish are not really exposed to 100 degree temps for very long.

Water outside will not heat up so much, the water tempurature WILL change, but will still remain fairly cool. Koi are very adaptable, and really don't mind which temperature water they are put in, slightly warmer, or slightly cooler, cold or mild, as long as they have some 'shade' (in terms of stones, plants rocks etc.), they will do quite well. Hope this helps! P.S my koi lasted in the 40 degree celcius heatwave weather last summer, and when the pond froze over at winter they couldn't care less!)
