My toilet would not flush at all this morning - there was no water in the tank. I filled the tank, and it flushed fine. I have not tested it again (had to leave for work). Any ideas why the water left the tank dry and how to test/fix it myself?

Is the water supply valve turned on? If so turn it off, if you have a fluid master type flush valve, they will sometimes get dirt particals in the gromet in the top of the valve . Remove the top lift out the black rubber ring, turn the water on very slowly to flush the valve,turn water off, replace gromet (a dollar or two for a pack of 10) it is a common problem.Replace cover lock cap.Turn water on full and ta!da! If it is a ball float assembly all of it may need replaced.

One possibility is that the drain flapper did not close properly and the rest of the tankful drained into the bowl. Sometimes the extra chain by the flapper gets caught under the flapper's lip and prevents closing. However then you would hear the toilet running constantly as it tried to refill the tank.
Another possibility is that someone shut off the valve after flushing. That is far-fetched but easy to check by turning the valve handle on the wall to be sure it is open.
The worst possibility is that there is a crack or looseness in the tank and that the water leaked out onto the floor. That would leave a puddle and keep the water running into the tank. That would be very bad for the floor and the ceiling below.

You will probably find that someone flushed the toilet and the flapper hung up and they didn't know how to stop the water from running so they turned off the water supply valve. Adjust the flapper chain/strap so the flapper "just" seals. If it is the fill valve, a new Fluidmaster 400A is about $7 at Home Centers and hardware stores and very simple to install with the included directions.

Make sure someone didn't turn the water off to the tank, you know down behind the toilet turn the knob counterclock wise and see if it does anything, like sound like the water is coming back into the tube? Or has the city turned the water off in your area for some reason? If the water is on and the toilet does it again then sounds like the problem might be in your pipes or outside and then it might be the citys problem, if you think it might be the city pipes then call your local water company and find out if there have been any water mian breaks or something?

Could be that the fill valve got hung up & did'nt drop the last time you flushed the toilet.
Pull the tank cover & check for anything obvious that would hang it up.
If it persists, replace the flush valve with a Fluidmaster flush valve, which is available at your local hardware store or home improvement center.

Well, you didnt mention any water ont he floor, so I guess it didnt leak out. Is it possible that someone in the hose turned off the water supply to the tank? Check the little knob down near the floor and make sure it is open. Its possible you will go home and eveything will be fine now that you refilled the tank yourself. Goodluck!

It sounds to me like the valve assembly isn't working. You can buy a whole replacement kit for about $7.00 at ACE Hardware.
