The United Kingdom is made up of 2 Countries, 1 Province and 1 Principality, but yet is a single entity economically, politically, militarily and nationality wise (by law anyway)

Nations contained with this state include, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Official name for the UK is, The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

It may possibly be because the English are the majority populous and through the expansion of the British empire, British soldiers and other people from Britain had always referred to the UK purely as England.

I don't think it's as common as you think. Especially for those of us who are of Scottish/Irish/Welsh descent.

English people living in or visiting the U.S. present themselves as 'Brits.' The U.S. news refers to everyone from the UK as 'Brits.'

As you know, the situation here is bloody complicated. Wales has an Assembly that is quite limited in scope, Scotland has a Parliament that gets to vote on certain issues but not others. Scots MPs get to vote on issues that pertain only to England (and Wales???). Northern Ireland has a Parliament that isn't currently standing. And so on. I'm not even sure I've gotten that exactly right and I live here. What do you expect a poor U.S. American who doesn't even have a passport to do with all of that? ;-)

My experience in France and Germany shows a clear understanding of the difference between England and Scotland, but that's insufficient data points to generalize.

I think a lot of it with U.S. Americans is that 1) they don't know any better so they do the best with what they hear and 2) what they hear is monolithic news reports and English people calling themselves 'Brits.' So the two become synonymous. If the English can't differentiate themselves, is it fair to complain when the rest of the world doesn't?
