Dude,
No worries.. not a stupid question...as the saying goes the only stupid question is the one ya dont ask! It sounds so cliche & silly but 'tis true! :)
I would not worry about turning off the mouse to conserve on the battery, I dont think you need to or there WOULD be something in the instructions. My husband uses one of those at his work and never tries to shut the mouse off or anything and I think he only changed the battery maybe once in the last 4-5 months or so & he uses it 60+ hours a week.
It aint like the batteries are gonna put ya in the poor house cause they are cheap, so just enjoy your cool wireless mouey! I want one tooo! LOL!

I have three wireless mice, two Logitech, one HP. All are batteried. I turn them all off at night. The HP has a recharge cradle, in which I place it, so it's probably not relevant in your case.
Both of the Logitech mice have USB thingies that hookup to the computer. One mouse has a straightforward switch on the underside. It also has a red light, indicating when the mouse is on. Turn off the switch. The mouse is off.
For the other Logitech, pull the USB thingie out of the computer, and place into the matching slot, on the bottom of the mouse (the slot that's shaped like the USB thingie). Then, and only then, the mouse is off.
Maybe you could go to the www.microsoft.com website and get instructions as to how to turn off your mouse.
Good luck!

Intelligent power lets you work and play without interruption.
Why waste time searching for new batteries? Microsoft's breakthrough Intelligent Power System delivers a suite of features that make wireless freedom easier than ever before. The convenient docking station functions much like the charger of your cordless home phone, giving each device weeks of usable time from a single charge.
And smarter power management—like intelligent backlighting, battery status indicator, and customizable performance slider—ensures your Microsoft mouse and keyboard will preserve power for maximum productivity.
Innovative features prolong battery life.
Microsoft wireless mice and keyboards automatically enter standby mode when inactive for a certain length of time, which minimizes unnecessary battery drain. And the light in the mouse’s optical sensor illuminates only as brightly as is necessary to provide optimal tracking power.
Microsoft's compact notebook mice have handy snap-in receivers that plug in when you’re ready to work, then snap into your mouse when you travel, further preserving battery life.

It automatically goes off when it doesn't receive any signal from the computer. As for the 6 months the manufacturer says that the buttery would last don't count on it,if I were you I would buy a rechargeable set of AA butteries to save some money.
Good luck...

Usually the mouse will get a signal from the computer when to turn on and off, so probably not. when you turn off your computer, the mouse will do the same, and vice- versa.

I think wireless "mice" are supposed to come with a charging station. if this is not the case than as with any battery operated appliance, by all means switch it off to conserve battery life.
And PULEASE don't feel stupid, so many many dumber questions on here....
