I'm getting a 20 Gallon tank next week, and trying to educate myself as much as possible beforehand. All the websites I've found either talk about Warm Water tanks, or Fresh Water tanks. Are these the same thing, with 2 different names?

Fresh water just means that the aquarium doesn't have salt.

A warm water aquarium is likely to mean a tropical aquarium - which would be tropical fish (i.e., not goldfish). They like warmer water.

If you go to PetSmart their fish tanks have labels saying whether they're tropical or not, the temperature range they like to stay at, and whether they need aquarium salt or not.

There are many types of tank. A warm water tank may be fresh water, brackish water or salt water. A fresh water tank may be cold water or warm, often called 'tropical' in the hobby.
These tanks are capable of houseing different types of fish, because the fish have different temperature needs, pH, hardness, and whether they are salt water or fresh water fish.
Getting a few books from the library would really help you, and this site is very helpful too, esp. the forums for questions and advise: http://www.aquahobby.com/e_home.php

Good luck!

A freshwater aquariums can be for both warm water and cold water. You can make freshwater aquarium warm by adding a heater to it. You can also make a freshwater aquarium cold by keeping at room temp, or by adding a chiller to it. In order to determine which type of freshwater aquarium you are going to need. You must look at the temp. requirements of the fish and/or plants that you plan on keeping.

I believe it is the same. Most tropical fresh water fish (except goldfish) require warm temperatures (generally between 75-80 degrees).

Theycan be the same, or not.

First there is temperature, either coldwater of warm water (tropical)

Then there is either freshwater, brackish or saltwater (marine)

You can see any combination such as a tropical freshwater aquarium. Usually, a site saying warmwater means a freshwater tropical tank so in web speak, yes, they usually the same.
