My relatives were indentured servants. Irish immigrants who were "under contract" for the fare paid bringing them to America. Problem was, the owner of said contract could extend servitude for petty "crimes" such as not completing tasks set out. Obviously was a corrupt system abused by most contract owners, so many Irish (and other ethnicities) were never released from servitude until this practice was regulated 100 years or more later. My "ancestors" were not slaves in the traditional definition, but were held in bondage. I guess the difference between myself and those descended from slaves in the traditional sense today would be that myself and my family choose not to bring it up or use it to gain some sort of slight.

If you were born and rasied in the South, then the chances are very likely that some of your family members did some very bad things to blacks that they have basically tried to forget about.
