How old should you be before you read the book "The Color Purple" by Alice Walker?

as long as you are aware of the content, your age doesn't matter, i read it when i was twelve. its a pretty good book.

13...Maybe 12....Because That Is The Age Level You Start To Learn About That Stuff...And It Will Just Be Great To Get It In Their Mind While Its Fresh...I Really Don't Find The Movie That Bad In The Explicit parts Such As Bad Language So If Its Cuz Of That Then Around 10....But As For Comprehending The Story Then 12-13

A mature teenager, even at 13, should be able to handle it, but the bottom line is, they are old enough when their parents say they are, and that means they would have to step back and realize the parents might see something that they can't in their own drive to be 'older'.

At least 13. It is a very heavy story and could scare or confuse younger readers.
