Why not tiers, or some other word? Where did that word description orginate?

Wiktionary has the root from Latin: historia: a row of windows with pictures on them. History derives from the same root which I guess is like looking at the past through windows or pictures. The average person in ancient times probably learned more from pictures than words.

It's also more commonly used in Europe, UK and commonwealth countries. In their usage the second floor is the 'First Storey'.

comes from Latin root of stor which meant compartment for a specific thing. therefore, stories is the perfect wod to describe the various floors of buildings, as each compartment is for a different thing.
