I consider myself to be prochoice, but now this can be defined as "within reason". I suppose it is because I have given birth to a baby and watched it develop, I don't know, but reading about abortions in the second trimester and partial births, I find them pretty disgusting. Dismembering a fetus in the uterus and the partial birth - removing the fetus and then crushing its skull, etc...doesn't that seem particularly heinous? The only reason this can be explained away is if the mother's health is directly at risk, not simply because the fetus has "something seriously wrong with it". I know that it is not an easy choice for a woman to have an abortion at all - I've had one myself - but I do agree that there has to be a fine line drawn and crushing a fetus's skull in my opinion is truly "killing". What do you think?

I think ending the life of a fetus no matter how old is "truly killing."

Why the distinction? Three months OK to kill, six months not? Did the DNA of the fetus change? Isn't it the same person no matter what month they are in?

Viewing the fetus as an object and not a person is simply the pro-abortionist rationalizing murder.

The reason they have to do this disgusting procedure is because the pregnancy is to far along to do a typical abortion.
With the "partial birth" the child (yes child) is often able to survive outside of the uterus because they are at the end of the second or beginning of the third trimester and they consider it an "abortion" because they are killing the child while still in the birth canal. So they can call it an "abortion" because the child is still technically inside the mother.
see this :http://www.luhs.org/health/topics/pregnant/images/develop.gif

The "abortion" consists ( please, don't read further if you are unable to read a horrible description)
Preliminary procedures are performed over a period of 2–3 days, to gradually dilate the cervix using laminaria tents (sticks of seaweed which absorb fluid and swell). Sometimes drugs such as synthetic pitocin are used to induce labor. Once the cervix is sufficiently dilated, the doctor uses an ultrasound and forceps to grasp the fetus' leg. The fetus is turned to a breech position, if necessary, and the doctor pulls one or both legs out of the birth canal, causing what is referred to by some people as the 'partial birth' of the fetus. The doctor subsequently extracts the rest of the fetus, usually without the aid of forceps, leaving only the head still inside the birth canal. An incision is made at the base of the skull and a suction catheter is inserted into the cut. The brain tissue is removed, which causes the skull to collapse and allows the fetus to pass more easily through the birth canal. The placenta is removed and the uterine wall is vacuum aspirated using a suction curette.[15] All this is done without an anestestia for the baby

The Second Trimester (13-28 Weeks)
What to Expect During the Second Trimester:
. The fetus has now developed all its organs and systems and will now focus on growing in size and weight.

Fetal Development During the Second Trimester (13-28 weeks):
Now that all the major organs and systems have formed in the fetus, the following six months will be spent growing. The weight of the fetus will multiply more than seven times over the next few months, as the fetus becomes a baby that can survive outside of the uterus.

By the end of the second trimester, the fetus will be about 13 to 16 inches long and weighs about 2 to 3 pounds. Fetal development during the second trimester (13-28 weeks) includes:

The fetus kicks, moves, and can turn from side to side.
The eyes have been gradually moving to the front of the face and the ears have moved from the neck to the sides of the head. The fetus can hear the mother's voice.

The fetus is developing reflexes such as swallowing and sucking.
The fetus can respond to certain stimuli.
The placenta is fully developed.
The brain will undergo its most important period of growth from the 5th month on.
Fingernails have grown on the tips of the fingers and toes, and the fingers and toes are fully separated.
The fetus goes through cycles of sleep and wakefulness.
Skin is wrinkly and red, covered with soft, downy hair (called lanugo).
Hair is growing on the head of the fetus.
Fat begins to form on the fetus.
Eyelids are beginning to open and the eyebrows and eyelashes are visible.
Fingerprints and toeprints have formed.
Rapid growth is continuing in fetal size and weight.
The 20th week marks the halfway point of the pregnancy.
A fetus born at the end of 24 weeks may survive in a neonatal intensive care unit.

In My opinion this is a terribly evil procedure that should be considered murder.

Yes because I support the ban on partial birth abortions and I am also pro-choice. The thing is they used this form of abortion and made it appear as if it was a regularly occuring form of termination. It was not. It was utilized mostly when it was to save the mother's life and the fetus was not going to be able to survive outside of the womb. The right to lifers made it seem as if that was not the case and the fetus was going to be able to live. While there were no accurate stats on the frequency of this type of abortion (anywhere from 1/10 of 1% to <2%) it was still extremely rare

Yes.

Like I said - partial birth happens in less than 2 % of the total abortions performed. I think that too much of a deal is being made over this partial birth abortion thing for simple political reasons. The Christian Right is getting that sense that the administration is doing something against abortion (not true), and it is whipping everyone into a tizzy about something that isn't even near the issue.

It isn't a decision that is made lightly by anyone involved. I think that one should focus on something more "significant" and prevelent, like the war, the rise in crime, illegal immigration, this stupid administration, or something very important to you personally. If this is causing such an issue with you, your life is pretty rosey.

I agree with you. A pre-term baby is typically put into Neonatal ICU at what 18-20 weeks of pregnancy, but yet a woman can abort a baby/fetus after that???

The procedure is barbaric, and unless the woman medically will not survive the pregnancy (not just she's under too much stress), we also need to consider the needs of that baby.

you're making an exceptionally good element ! I volunteered and understood what the outcomes. very good element ! i do no longer understand the way anybody can help one in all those savage coverage and libs say we conservatives are heartless. and you realize why they get away with it ? by using shutting down clever debate with their accusations like we would want to eliminate peoples civil liberties. yet human beings have it backwards while they make such baseless accusations. people who upward push up against issues like parcial delivery abortion or dialation and extraction (because of the fact the supporters of this barbaric prepare want to call it) are merely drawing a line that could desire to be held. A line that represents the version between top and incorrect. Dialation and extraction, thats an exciting thank you to overt the authentic brutality of this technique that grew to become into the brainchild of Dr Martin Haskle, the author of it. yet i think of the question you ask comes back to my unique argument and that's that liberals an entire will no longer be able to stand toe to toe with conservative princibles. because of the fact our philosophy is rooted contained in extremely the fee of top and incorrect while liberal ideals are ever changing reckoning on the enviroment. Redefining it into extra of a fluid theory. yet liberal innovations are incorrect and nonetheless yet risky in yet another much less obtrusive way. by using legitmizing homicide like that of third term abortion they have cheapened existence. And decreased the act of ending a existence right down to a count of convienience.

Congratulations. You have finally realized what a slippery slope the idea of 'pro-CHOICE' really is. Whose choice? Regarding what? Within what bounds? That's why the real dichotomy is truly pro abortion and anti abortion. Anything less is an attempt to massage egos.

totally, i'm pro-life, but see a NEED for abortions, however, in America, it's portrayed as a last effort to make a good decision, when for many it is just a convenience.
a good decision would be to not put yourself in a position to do so much harm to yourself and others.
