I saw a powerpoint + switch face plate the other day and I'm very interested in making it work. Essentially it will allow me to convert an ordinary light switch to a powerpoint without running addition wires.

This is how it looks like: http://www.hpm.com.au/Products/?S=1905, the 3rd one from the top (Cat. No. 787X)

Problem is that it doesn't come with any instructions. By the look of it, it requires 2 sets of wires, 1 set goes to the switch, and the other goes to the socket.

However, there's only 1 set of wire leading to the existing light switch. I was wondering is it safe to tap the power from the light switch to power the socket? I intend to use the socket to power a computer.

Thanks.

Thanks for the responses so far. I will examine the existing switch and go from there. I will post some pictures for illustration.

edit:
When I wrote this I was unaware that it was for use in Australia. So don't count on the below information to be accurate. The info would be good in the US.
I don't know for sure if there is a neutral in the switch wiring, you should be able to check it out though. Good luck

You could tap off the hot wire on the switch, but sometimes they do not run the neutral wire to the switch. You may only have the hot wire and a switched hot wire.

If that is the case you will need to get another feed, preferably from another outlet and hook those wires up to the power point.

Look at the wires into the switch now. Do you have a couple of white wires hooked together with a wire nut? It should be either a yellow or red looking cap with 2 or more white wires connected to it. These white wires will not be connected to the switch an any way. If so, then you do have the neutral running to the switch and can connect the outlet to the wiring.

Good luck.

Light Switches And Powerpoints

DON'T DO IT!!!, as a rule light and power circuits are kept seperate, the existing wires you see are probably still connected to the lights running in your house. Light and Power circuits use different size cables due to the amps that are drawn and a light circuit is not designed to have a computer attached to it - Call a Sparky

I do not come from your country but usually the regulations are similar.
It is highly not recommended to convert to a power point. The power allocated for lighting is much less than that for power point, as such the MCB and cable size is less for lighting.
Converting the lighting to power point may(will) draw to much power, overloading the circuit. this may trip the circuit or worse, overheat the wires and circuit that may result in fires.

Legally also do not allow. Your local regulator may also require you to employ licensed electrician for the works.

Hope this helps.

The best and SAFE way is to get someone over to do it and you help him, that way it's done right and safe and you'll learn.
