78% of laptops comes from Taiwan - be it Dell, HP, Acer, Toshiba, etc. And there, only 3 companies manufacture it. Laptop brand company just added features and repackage it.

The important thing to check is the support that comes with the laptop. If you can afford it, dont go for the cheapest model. All these branded laptops have their "low", "mid", "high" -end models. The trouble really comes from the "low"-end models.

Check their warranties. Most of the laptops have a standard 1-year. But if there is a 3-year without any additional cost, go for it.

Check their tech support. Even if you haven't purchased their product yet, give them a call.

Check for local support. Some Manufacturers doesnt have a local support partner and you end up sending the laptop by package to the Manufacturer.

Get that insurance, most laptops are expensive enough so that it costs an arm and a leg. and laptops are supposed to be laptops which means it is mobile - prone to theft, accidental breakage, droppage, liquid spills, etc.

And if you decided to purchase one, make sure you test drive it within a week. Most stores have a limited time (usually a week where you can return or exchange the product). Past this, your stuck with the laptop.

I vote for IBM/Lenovo and HP (in that order).

I vote for going to consumerreports.com (if you can finagle a membership or know a friend who's a member), PC magazine (free reviews), eopinion.com, and other such places for reviews. Google "pc reviews" for authoritative reviews and browse and enjoy for a day.

I vote for going to a manufacturer's website, acting as if you're going to buy, configuring your computer as if you want it (like, with *all* the features and upgrades you want) to get an idea.

Finally, I vote for going to Froogle for a price. To do that: go to www.google.com. Up on the right end of the search bar, where it says more>> click and go for Froogle and go type your computer brand and model and look for search results sorted by price!

Dell will be cheaper with not so good spec... As in no CD/DVD writer, 512 MB of Ram and not bad hardware...

Acer... Very bad servicing experience for me [In Singapore]...

LG would love to try [Up to about 8.5 hour battery life on a 12.1 inch model, if i remembered correctly]...

HP heard from friend not so good... Fujitsu/Sony should be of high price...
