If your pitching staff is weak, Carpenter is not a good guy to base it around. He is hurt, and plays for a team that is struggeling this year to produce runs. You should try your best to hold on to Carpenter, but try to trade for some other guys... here are my suggestions:
1. Trade for a solid Releif Pitcher- Guys in the bullpen see alot of action. Mariano Rivera is probabally allready taken, but guys like Al Reyes- Takashi Saito- and Jose Valverde are all solid guys who you can pick up as free agents.
2. Trade for a consistant starter- You dont always need a guy who will get 20 or 25 wins. Guys who are consistant can really help a pitching staff. Ching Ming Wang, Tom Glavine, and Ramon Ortiz are all solid guys (some may even be avaliable as free agents).
3. You should also decide who you want to center your staff around. Mine, for example, is centered around Roy Halladay who is consistant with alot of K's. I then have mostly Releif Pitchers like Mariano Rivera, Trevor Hoffman, BJ Ryan. For safety reasons, incase one of them has a bad year, i picked up some guys who always have average years like Andy Pettite, Tom Glavine. Guys who will lose some games, but will get you some points.

If I were you, I'd try to improve your staff, but try to keep Carpenter.
