FTP = File Transfer Protocol. A FTP server stores files. This was before HTTP (web browsers) and even GUI's. It is a system-neutral way to share files, and uses simple commands like "ls" (list directory), "cd" (change directory), "mget *.*", etc.
Now, the HTTP protocol allows downloading binary files (like all those images in a web page), so FTP downloads are not really needed. Some still use FTP servers because it is extremely simple to set it up to automate sending and/or receiving files.
