You would use if if you want to "control" for a certain variable in statistical samples. For example you might stratify by gender into male and female and sample from those 2 groups. Or you might stratify by age and then sample from those groups.

a)she doesnt randomly select her participants so if the nerds had a faster reaction times she could have picked all the nerds to have better results b)She could take an equal amount of people randomly with equal amounts of girls and boys ex. 5 boys 5 girls
