You didn't say what it was caused by. If it's from burning toast or something, just air it out and give it time, use Febreeze and Oust. If you had a house fire, you're going to have to wash everything and replace your carpets and paint, most likely.
Cigarette smoke is another issue. If you were the smoker and lived there and have now quit, you will, at the very least, need to clean your carpets (replace them if this was years of smoking), clean your upholstery, and wash or paint your walls, depending on the severity. Also wash all other fabric stuff, bedding, curtains, etc.
If a smoker visited, then it probably hasn't permeated and you could get by with Febreeze, Oust, and washing stuff. Air it out, too.
Good luck!

You should have been more specific about the kind of smoke we are dealing with. I am going to assume you mean cigarette smoke. You are going to have to wash walls, clean carpet, wash all fabrics, such as as clothes, linens, curtains, and just let your house be open and airy. Also, use white vinegar for cleaning windows and such. If nicotene gets built up, windex may just smear it around. The smell of vinegar works wonders on odors too, try mixing some with water and boiling it on the stove for a while, that will eliminate odor too. Good luck!

You will need to wash clothes and linens that smell like smoke. An odor neutralizer such as Febreeze should be sprayed on couches and rugs that cannot be washed. Keep the windows open to allow the house to air out. Good luck!

Lawmom is right. Burned toast, just air the house. House fire, call in professional cleaners as they have the equipment to clean everything.....and I do mean everything including vents. Then what can't be cleaned well enough will have to be replaced.
Cigarette or other product requires airing as well as cleaning. If it was a short time exposure, vacuum floors and furniture, drapes and blinds, scrub floors, wash counters, windows tables, etc. Finally open windows. Long term exposure and you are trying to sell a house, you'll need to at least wash all the walls and ceiling and have the carpets cleaned.

First of all, machine wash all curtains, because the smoke is in the curtains. Then, purchase extra-strength febreeze, and spray all upolstered furniture, rugs, and bed covers(blankets). Last, purchase some highly scented candles to burn. It may also help to open windows, to allow fresh air in.
