You did not say, but the best method really depends on your goal.

If you are talking about sharing internet usage, then a simple router will do. Best idea get a Wireless-G MIMO router from one of the majors. My favorite is the Belkin right now.

(most major electronics stores carry it, or you can find it online.)

If you are talking about just creating a sharing network, without internet access, you can use a switch.

However, in most cases, you can accomplish both with the simple router that I mentioned above.

You simply plug in your broadband connection into the router, and then use the wireless or plug-in connection with a Ethernet cable. If your PC is far away from where you place the router, you can even get a wireless card for your PC, so that you do not have to run wires.

From there you need to setup a network and sharing from within your OS (windows). In most cases the default setup for DHCP and TCP/IP will do for putting you where you need to be on the network side. From there, look for SHARING on the properties of any resource, be it printer, file, folder, etc...

A client only setup, will require that you create the same users on all clients, both on your laptop and then both on your PC. From there you simply give the users (other client) acess to share the resource you want on the other.

Good hunting!

If your buying a laptop and a Home Pc, what are you on now?
Then again, who doesnt own a computer by now? lol jk
You will need a wireless router, they sell them at ALL the computer stores. Like Best Buy CompUSA and Circut city ect. Best Buy to me has a good selection.
I dont know what kind of internet your going to get. But they best bet, since your buying a laptop and a PC, I am sure its new, so you will want the most speed out of it as possible. So get Cable Internet or BroadBand (uses a TV cable wire) Some compamies, like Comcast will give you the stuf and will do it for you. Some wont, like I have COX, and they are not aloud to touch the router, (and yes I had to buy it my self) you will need a wireless card for the laptop, OR the laptop may have a biult in one. (many many many do, as far as new ones) You will then need to connect the router to the main source of the internt. Fron there, sent internet, mostlikey threw a wire to the PC and it will automaticly go threw Wirelessly to the Laptop. Theres still alot left to do, like setup and small things, but this is the main answer to your question.
Hope I helped.

Two things. First: You could buy a router from Best Buy. Linksys has one but there are others. Basically, you attach the Ethernet cord from the modem to the router. Then you attach your 2 computers to the router using separate ethernet cables. Or better yet, buy a wireless router so you won't need cords. Just be sure to buy security for it. (firewall etc.)
Second: To attach the computers, so you can share files, you can then use an amazing software program called Network Magic at www.NetworkMagic.com to attach your computers in a network. Alternatively, you can hire someone from Geeks on Call to drop by to set it up for you. It will cost you 200 or so dollars to get them to do it, and it might be worth it if you don't like network magic. I hope that helps.

You'll need a router (or modem router if you're using ADSL instead of DSL/cable). You can then connect your 2 machines to this box with wires (the standard cable that you normally use) or wirelessly if you get a WiFi router.

All you need is a DSL account and a router. Since you have a laptop you might want to use a wireless router, though.
