It depends. I consider my closest friends to be family members. If I didn't specifically group them with blood relations, I have a close friend from childhood who has lived out of state for several years now, and I would contact her. If possible, I would actually try to hop a plane and spend as much of my last time with her, if possible, because we've been so close through the years.
If I did exclude those friends who I truly consider to be family members, then I would contact the lady who used to take care of my great-grandmother when I was very young. She is quite elderly now, and I would want her to know that she was like another grandmother to me, and that I truly did love her as though she were a member of my family, as well.
