How about turning the names around and name him James Caden. That way they will have the same first name, but he will not be a Jr.

Caden James is a very nice name (you could always nickname him CJ rather that JR). Maybe your husband doesn't realize that someday when your son is old enough and is starting to get phone calls from friends and ask for James, you'll have to say Jr or Sr? Besides it would be cute now, but when he is older he will want his own identity.

The tradition in our family is to give all the boys the same middle name, it started with our great great grandad his name was Fletcher James and so all the boys have these as middle names Harry Fletcher James , Daniel Fletcher James and so on, all apart from my sister in law who insisted on the the middle name Eric after her father ... there is always one !
Anyway i would definatly put my foot down on the Jr part it is a huge pressure to give the first born that title and children thereafter may feel excluded or not special .
Caden is a fab name and is as individual as your child will be.

I know how you feel, when I was pregnant with my son my husband is a Jr but yet he still wanted our son to be named after him. Rafael the third wasnt a good name & I actually told him his name wasn't hot & the baby is gonna be stuck with that name forever. One day we received my husbands name misspelled on a letter "Rajael" and we used that name to make our own for our son. We took out the "Ra" and added an "i" between the 'a' and the 'e'- "Jaiel" we were both happy with it. Try asking family & friends on front of him which name sounds better, hopefully they will go with the Caden James. Try playing silly games like ' voting' with your family & friends, have everyone write the name that they like on a piece of paper without showing anyone else, put it in a container and check which name got picked more. Then that's what you'll name your son.

Good luck & congrats...

I am in the exact situation. My husband's name is James. His father is James but they dont share the same middle name. I just told him that I liked James Aidan and he was happy b/c I used James as the first name. Just like with his father, they will share the first name, but change the middle name. So there is no need for the JR part. They already share the same first and last name.

Subtle - Get his family and friends to agree with you.

Straightforward - Get examples of people who lived in the shadows of their fathers. Find a cultural reasons why it is a bad idea - in some cultures you don't name a baby after a living relative.

Aggressive way - play the pregnancy card - you are doing all the work and if you really don't want a JR - then you shouldn't have one! Besides, why should your baby be closer linked to Dad then Mom - it is just unfair!

Using Dad's first name as a middle is a great compromise between two extremes.

IF you like the name James then I think you should use James as your son's first OR middle name...whichever you both like better. That way your son is names after your husband, but he's not a Jr..

If you don't want to use James at all for your son's name then tell your husband that you want your son to be able to have is OWN identity and his OWN name.

Good luck!

We have the same situation, but for my I wanted to name my boy(if have one) JR and my fiancee is totally against it!
Is your hubby a JR also or no? I think Caden James is cute! just keep pushing him and maybe he will come around! also someone made a good suggestion, get his mother to agree with you on the name! Could work!
Good Luck and Congrats!

Caden James is a great way to honor him, much better than a Jr.

I think that Caden James is a really cute. My boyfriend wants to name our child JR if we had one. I don't want to though. Just talk to him and say that you should get to choose his first name and he gets to choose the middle.

Good Luck
