Social, sexual, and genetic monogamy
Social monogamy refers to two people who live together, have sex with one another, and cooperate in acquiring basic resources such as food, clothes, and money. Sexual monogamy refers to two people who remain sexually exclusive with one another and have no outside sex partners. Genetic monogamy refers to the fact that two partners only have offspring with one another.

Monogamous pairs of animals are not always sexually exclusive. Many animals that form pairs to mate and raise offspring regularly engage in sexual activities with partners other than their primary mate. This is called extra-pair copulations. First of all monogamy does not necessarily mean that one has only one partner during his whole life it simply means that one has one partner at a time and that partners usually spend some decent time together.

I believe that the consequences of polygamy is what made humans to choose monogamous relationships over polygamous ones, i.e. for the sake of preserving the social structure monogamous relationships is the solution.

From a scientific standpoint humans are not monogamous by nature. The female attempts to create monogamy in order to keep "food on the table". Males are constantly looking to spread there genes. However as a western society we have grown to the point where we practice monogamy as a social norm.

However, this is not the case everywhere. Muslim beliefs allow for up to 4 wives. Some groups in the US also believe in polygamy (break away secs of the LDS Church and various "Christian" groups)

I myself don't feel that I would want a 2 or more wives. It's hard enough to do my best to keep one happy. Introducing more then one only add jealousy and other issues.

Only a handful of the roughly 4000 mammals have ever been called monogamous by biologists, and humans aren't on the short list. Two tall people aren't likely to be any more faithful than a couple of varying heights, because humans are not biologically monogamous. Our society, however, has generally conditioned us toward monogamy (often under the guise of religion, morals, marriage, etc.).

Most humans, however, tend to blend societal and biological impulses into what I like to call 'serial monogamy'. Most of us tend to have one partner at a time -- with occasional lapses by some. If we mated for life, like monogamy suggests, we would all still be with our first boyfriend/girlfriend.

Human species are never monogamous. In early civilisation
20,000 to 30,000 years ago people were known by their
mother. After that the stongest male dominated over all the
females of the herd. This was creating lot of tension in the
society.A male is so much sexually oriented that he canot
do any useful work unless his sexual needs are fulfilled. The
mothers also require the help of males to nurture her offsprings.
Then society introduced the system of monogamous marriage.
By this first step in the civilised life namely family has been made.

Depends very much on the society and how well a person adheres to the beliefs of that society he or she lives in. There are a lot of cultures that have some form of polygamy or no marriage at all. Other cultures encourage monogamy and even then some people choose to "cheat" on their spouses. The cycle goes on and on!

to help raise children. human babies are fragile and weak for the first years of their life. by having two partners, they increase the likelihood that the child will make it to adulthood to pass on their genes. by being monogamous the male is ensured that the child is his and thereby increases the likelihood that he will stick around to help raise the child. this however is only in theory.
