your comparing the best hockey player ever to a kid that never even top'd the 40 goal mark yet...
get over it ppl... Crosby is the next one but not the great one...
Crosby is the second coming of Denis Savard, Forsberg or Yzerman... not Wayne Gretzky or Lemieux...
(look up the 1st and 2nd year stats of these players and you'll see)
to answer the REAL question... I say about one in five people or 20% thinks Sid is better then Wayne... mostly modern fans that are younger, Penguins fans and people from Nova Scotia...
Follow-up:
well, judging by the reaction of this thread... 20% seems about right... lol

He will never break ALL of Gretzky's records-- consider these two simple facts; Gretzky has more ASSISTS than anyone else has POINTS, and, Gretzky owns or shares 63 NHL scoring records. Consider the unattainability of these other records as well-- 163 assists in an 80 game season, a 2 assist per game average, 92 goals (the next highest total being 87 and that was almost 15 years ago) 215 points in a season....
Gretzky is also the only player EVER to score more than 200 points in a season and he did it 4 times with two other seasons of at least 180. Fastest player ever to 50 goals--39 games....
Crosby simply does not compare to 'The Great One'; to compare the two is to hold Crosby up to unrealistic and unfair expectations, moreover, whether or not they will EVER be comparable, whether or not it will EVER be appropriate to speak of them in the same sentence when discussing skill level and accomplishments will not be known until Crosby's career is over. To do so any earlier diminishes Gretzky's otherworldly accomplishments, puts Crosby on a level he hasn't earned, and simply put, borders on heresy in the eyes of any serious fan of this great game and it's history.

You're comparing two different types of players. In his prime, Gretzky was a goal scorer feared like no one had ever been feared before him...while Crosby is like what Gretzky was at the end of his career. Crosby's a playmaker...a set-up man...he's gonna score some goals and a lot of them, so don't get me wrong here. But it won't be anywhere near the level that Gretzky scored in his prime.
From where I'm sitting, Sid's gonna break some of the Great One's records...but he definitely won't break all of them for sure. I may be a Wings fan, but I can appreciate a great player no matter who he plays for.

First off, Crosby probably won't break any of Gretzky's records because the style of play is so different now. Crosby could be twice as good as Gretzky and still never score 92 goals in a year, for example. Having said that, if you compare Gretzky's first two years to Crosby's first two years - even if you adjust the stats to make up for the differences in overall play from Gretzky's time to now - I think Gretzky still comes out ahead.

The new rules favor Crosby. Regardless, there are some records I don't think he will break.
I don't think Crosby and Gretzky are exactly alike. They play(ed) slightly differently, for example Crosby is stronger than Gretzky was -- he doesn't need a protector as much as Gretzky did (and unfortunately, theres not a lot of room for an enforcer anymore).
If Gretzky played in the new NHL, I do believe he would be better.
It's still WAY too early to tell.

I'm not a Pens fan, nor do I dislike them. Crosby has talent beyond Gretzky. Gretzky played in a time that allowed him to break records. Crosby will break records too.
To compare the two is not possible. However if I were putting a team together today, I would choose Crosby over Gretzky.

i was looking forward to ripping you apart until i read further. Crosby isn't even ready to be rated among the top 50 all time yet. he's not, it doesn't matter what pen fan says. he's 19, hasn't won anything signifigant yet and might suck next year. I will admit it's likely he'll be considered among the greats when all is said and done but really to annoint him already cheapens the process. he has to sustain it over time. a. mogilny scored 86 goals in 60 something games and he was going to be the "next" one. Eric Lindros, Mario, Jagr, on and on... until it happens, noone is Gretzky. And most old timers still consider Orr better than Gretzky overall so... Every chance you get, remind pen fan that they'll lose their team before Crosby hits his prime.

It must be less than 1%. He will never beat many, if any of Wayne's records. He's good and will get better, but he will not be as good as Mario either. He is scoring a lot less goals than they did in their first years and Mario was on a much worse team for sure. Passing wise he may(I emphasize MAY) be somewhere close to them over his career, but not in goals. I don't see it. When Mario was 18 he almost scored 50(46) on the worst team in the league and he missed 4 games. Crosby only scored 39 goals at 18 on a much better offensive team, but in a more defensive era(That should pretty much balance them out). Crosby also played 5 more games than Lemieux. So on average, Lemieux is about 10 goals ahead of Crosby at 18. Gretzky's pace was even a little ahead of Mario's, so as goal scorers, Crosby is not at the same level.

In today's NHL I don't think Crosby has much of a chance at some of his records. The athletes today are much bigger, much faster, and much stronger. Yes, the rule changes have allowed for more scoring, but unless Crosby has a small wealth of talent surrounding him to take a little of the pressure off from opposing defenses, he will have too tough a time I think.
As far as skill goes....I think Crosby might have been a better player than Gretzky had they played at the same time during each of their primes. It's just too hard to speculate what Gretzky could do if he was in his prime in today's NHL and what Crosby would've done had he been born 20 years sooner.

What's the questions..what % of people do i think will say Crosby is better than Gretzky? I'd say if you could sample the entire world, less than 2%.
If your question how do i rate crosby and whine gretzky? Gretzky is better. One thing..it's too early in Crosby's career to compare him to guys who have retired. I don't think Crosby is better than Mario either.
