I have stuttered for as long as i can remember. I have taken speech therapy lessons and even did a 3000 dollar for 3 day program. It taught me to take deep breaths and slow down. However lately nothing seems to be working.

My friend says that i have a lack of confidence, but that's because i stutter. And i can grantee you i would be very confident if i could speak fluently.

I am an actor...doing final year Theatre Studies. It pissed me off when i cant even read out the lines for some and for others i read well or perfectly....it makes no sense.

Now my latest ordeal is to try and prepare for a speech for English. Everyone will be all laxidasical about it while i will have to go over my speech for weeks in advance to have any hope of succession in saying it fluently. I was actually a finalist last year because i hardly stuttered at all and people finally know I'm not a complete moron.

Please, if stuttering effects confidence and visa verse...how the hell do i escape?

I have several uncles and cousins who used to stutter. They all said that overcoming their stuttering took patience and practice, and that they had to constantly be going back over and over the things that they had learned. All of them used the book "Self Therapy for the Stutterer" published by The Stuttering Foundation. One also went to a specialist in treating stuttering. The book can be obtained from the Foundation through their e-store at www.stutteringhelp.org and some public libraries shelve it.

One cousin told me that the more he tried not to stutter, the more he did. One thing that he had to do was to teach himself to not care what others thought of his speech or him. All stutterers have good days and bad days and will stutter more in some situations than in others.

The Stuttering Foundation also has information on a new drug that is being studied - Pagoclone (sp?). Your doctor may know of something that will help you temporarily while you are working through the Self Therapy book.

I think the attitude needs to be not "how I can escape" but "How I can cope" You may not be able to control your fluency level, but you can control your attitude about it. Perhaps focus on communication, not level of fluency. Stuttering is very difficult to live with and people who stutter show courage everyday that they live out of courage and strength, even in the face of tremendous adversity. Good Luck.
