Oh, stop it with these so-called questions that just want to capitalize on this tragedy for not-so subtle agendas.
The same kind question was heard after 911, the subway bombings, Madrid bombings.
You also get a similar type question around Thanksgiving and Xmas about how can you enjoy your dinner while X-number of people are dying somewhere.
Different tragedy similar question by some tactless person pretending to care when they really don't.
The seeming indifference remark is a strawman to boot.

What happened at Virgina Tech is by all means a tragedy. A tragedy that could have been prevented from becoming so terrible is the question. The V Tech massacre is being reported on EVERY news station and EVERY website homepage with new developments pouring in every 30 minutes. Any time something like this happens, there is typically something much more catastrophic that has happened somewhere in the world. We never hear about these other incidents however, because our media stations are flooded with the same story. This is the government's way of diverting our attention from more serious issues. If you search "United States + Darfur" you will see the much more serious issue at hand.
Google earth, a web based search engine available to our goverment's viewing and the public's, has recorded the genocide (mass killings of one race/religion) in the region of Darfur. The Sudanese Government and the Janjaweed are systematically killing civilians (over 200,000 since 03' reportedly targeting the Fur, Masalit and Zaghawa ethnic groups) and routinely using rape and other forms of sexual violence as weapons of terror.
What are we doing to help? These refugee citizens have no food, water, transportation, weapons, or shelter.
The BBC reported on Monday April 15, 2007 at 5:35 AM, less than 2 hours before the V Tech shooting, the most recent candid update of the citizens of Darfur. Complete with a photographic documentary of the depressing reality at hand. You can find the video on Yahoo videos. Enter the keyword 'Darfur' and several videos will appear. Mysteriously, this report is cut off in the middle and no other information has been found.
Today, Pres. Bush announced that we will cut off all aid to that region if Sudan does not allow the "UN" to enter. The reality is, Sudan will not be suffering, the Darfur citizens will.
But, I'm sure the overwhelming American majority has never heard of this crisis.

I can tell you that the loss of life, either here at home or in a war in a far away land is shared and felt by people from all walks of life. But understand the differences in the situations. In a war or in a war zone, the chances of being killed are a lot greater and it does come with a certain amount of expectation that people are going to get shot and killed or wounded. On a college campus in a peaceful, quiet setting, you tend to put thoughts of mass killers out of your mind and concentrate on your studies and the Friday night ballgame. I have never sensed an indifference about casualties in Iraq. It is just as heartbreaking as any other death. But remember, American and allied soldiers, sailors and marines are putting their butts on the line to make life better for the Iraqi people. If you are looking to condemn the war, look to the insurgency. The insurgent forces are the ones who are prolonging our stay there and they are the ones responsible for the killings. America is doing an aweful lot to help rebuild Iraq... just because you don't see it on the nightly news doesn't mean it isn't happening.

I mean casualties of war is a totally different story when you are talking about men and women who know they are in danger everyday and when you pay to go to a school you hope that you are safe for the however many years you are there and if you arent then you feel scared and I think that everyone should have sympathy for these people who were there in VT.I mean I live 30 mins down the road from Virginia Tech and I know that I hate VT but hearing about this has made me feel so sorry for these people and their families so I mean if you dont grieve the same ways that other people do then that is fine and if you disagree then state your opinion and just go on with your life and let everyone else deal with things the way that they want to.

I think the VT shootings come very close to home for many of us. We are sending our oldest son off to college hundreds of miles away in the fall, and it's very frightening when something like this happens. It makes us realize yet again that we just never know what might happen, and none of us can be sure of our own safety and that of our loved ones.
As far as public indifference toward the horrible casualties in Iraq goes, I don't think that's true at all. I think most people now see that this is a false war based on lies and we should never have gone there in the first place. However, I also think that many people feel helpless in the face of such incompetence and lack of morals on the part of our government, and don't really know what they as private individuals can do to stop the war.
Take care.

I don't believe there is indifference towards the the casualties of Iraq. Anytime there is human loss of life, it is very sad and people grieve.
The difference is we've been grieving for those in Iraq for several years now and VA Tech only a couple of days.

Iraq is a war zone, a university or school is suppose to be a place of learning and safety. A soldier knows that when he goes to a war zone that there is a chance he will get killed by a gun, bomb etc. A student goes to school thinking they are safe and will learn something not thinking heh! i might just get killed by a madman today. I don't think there is indifference towards those casualties in Iraq, we all still feel sorrow for them and their families. Unfortunately everyday someone over there gets killed we are just used to seeing it on the news.

People should care about the soldiers and casualties of Iraq just as much as the VA Tech victims. What people are forgetting about is that those soldiers are over there protecting us as Americans and our right to Freedom.

Because the Va Tech incident is an isolated, completely random/unexpected, undeserving tragedy, whereas war is not. Although ever single solider's death is tragic and very sad, the casualties are to an extent expected because it is a war and it is those solider's jobs to lay their lives down for their country. The only jobs those students were doing at the time was attending class, where death is never literally expected.

Because those kids are there to learn not get shot at and the soldiers in iraq no what they are there for and that there is a chance they might not come back so we can be free!!! It is a cold person that can just go into a school and shoot people for no reason!!!! As far as Iraq, they just need to make that place a ocean and bring our people home before more life is lost.
GOD BLESS VT

It grew to become into 'purely' because of the fact she grew to become into working in a international publicised media adventure - had she died on a decrease profile adventure - it would have previous (almost) as a one sentence media remark. there has been a million-2 donning activities that have additionally been interior the united kingdom media those days with regard to the close to dying/dying of human beings collaborating - and that (for the united kingdom) might warrant media exposure. The media 'comes to a decision/possibilities and chooses' what the commonplace public would be cautioned on - those 'different' incidents no longer (likely) information worth of a media remark in any respect.
