Well, you can design any thing you want, conduct commerce or transactions, have no guidelines or restriction, display or say what you want, have memberships or link to sites.
The stuff on Yahoo is just basic so, if that is all you need, then so be it.

Professional web design is much different than using Yahoo! to build a web site. Take a look at www.springwaterwoodcraft.com which is a Yahoo built website. It is done very well and looks somewhat professional. However, it has the same cookie cutter look and layout that every other yahoo built page has. It simply doesn't stand out from the crowd.
Now take a look at the sites listed here: http://www.thebestdesigns.com/
There is no comparison. The sites designed by professionals are meant to portray a certain image of the company they represent. Web designers are experts in Marketing, Graphic Arts, and Programming. This simply can't be matched by spending 20 minutes or even several days designing a site within the confines of Yahoo!.

The point of studying web design is to learn more advanced techniques of working with the web, how to APPROPRIATELY work for the web, and how the web actually works.
Yes, anyone can just get a free template and slap glitter graphics and weird ebonic languages as text. However, those who do that will not ever have any chance of creating a website for someone else for profit. Its much more rewarding to be able to create your own site, rather than use something everyone else is using.
I've been studying web design for 5 years now, and there is so much technical information that 99% of the people on MySpace would never understand besides "copy and paste code into about me." Being able to create your own web stuff sets you apart creatively and individually.

In all honesty, if you are not comfortable with html programming or don't want to take the time to learn a web design language, then a pre-built template webbuildiers, such as yahoo or homestead or perfect as you won't have to worry with all the coding.
But you should also take into consideration that the fact is that you are limited to what the software allows.
When you can program and code your on html sites, you get full control or nearly every aspect of your sites looks and features. Your are basically not limited. You are only limited to what you know to program.
It's probably best, if you need a nice site up fast then use the online tools to build one, and learn the code to the language you want to use, so that in the future, you can always add to and rebuild to your EXACT needs.

I'm a web designer and graphic artist. I want you to take a look at the cingular website, or the goldman sachs website. The people who did those sites are artists. Unless you are an artist with knowledge in Photoshop, and Flash editing a template to perfection is very difficult and most templates don't have as much of a authentiic feel as a website done by a top artist specifically for your business. Not to mention if you actually know design and are good at it you can make $ designing templates.

By studying web design you can work for a corporation that deals with internal websites like me. You can build more professional looking slick websites than what Yahoo! gives.
There is so much to website design that templates don't give. There is so much overhead on templates that slow down your web page a lot, which if you did yourself would be faster and slicker.

To make a internet site as prevalent as myspace or youtube you may (a million) be offering a provider for thousands and thousands of people for loose, and (2) have some thing or furnish some thing that toddlers and youth no longer basically choose, yet choose and crave. you additionally can in simple terms set up a internet site that delivers out $a hundred to people's PayPal debts basically for putting of their PayPal digital mail handle - and that they'd do it as quickly as an hour. you would be the biggest hit on the information superhighway at that factor.

Building a website -- and building a GOOD website that people will actually want to revisit -- are two totally different things.
My husband is a landscaper and can plant a nice garden -- but if I want to pay money to see REAL garden designs, I will go to Longwood Gardens where professionals handle the job much better.

Ditto all the above. What it boils down to is, if you're willing to live with a pre-fab house, move into a subdivision. If you want a house truly and fully to spec, build yer own.
