problems such as these are best solved by "crossing" them. Here is how it works:
(term 1) (term 3)
--------- = --------
(term 2) (term 4)
the mathematical relationship between the terms is 1 X 4 = 2 X 3
in most problems, one of the terms is some sort of variable. In the problem , it is term number 3. Therefore, the relationship becomes:
3 times 2 = 7 times "x" (or) 6 = 7X
at this point one uses another rule of algebra. It states that if one preforms some operation to the right side of an equation, and then preforms exactly the same operation to the left side, the equation remains the same. For example (using addition):
if X = 2 then X + 1 = 2 + 1
disivion can be used as well, and in the problem:
if 6 = 7X then 6/7 = 7X/7 (or ) 6/7 = 0.857 = X
then answer is therefore, 0.857
if one wants to check the answer, substitute it for "x" in the original equation and hence,
3 divided by 7 = (0.857) divided by 2 ??
0.428 = 0.428 (yes!!)
hope this helps

The easy way to solve for x when you have an equation of this type is to cross multiply the two sides of the equal side then solve for x
example 3/7 = X/2 - to cross multiply - multiply the 7 on one side times the X on the other side and 3 on one side times the 2 on the other side. This will give you a new equation 7X=6. Now if you solve for X by dividing both sides of the = sign by 7 you will get that X=0.857

3/7 = x/2
Multiply both sides of the equation by 7 and by 2 to clear the fractions:
7*2*3 / 7 = 7*2*x / 2
Now you can divide both numerator and denominator of the LHS by 7, giving 2*3 = 6
You can divide both numerator and denominator of the RHS by 2, giving 7*x
Hence 6 = 7*x
(This shows where the concept of cross-multiplying has come from.)
7*x = 6
Divide by 7:
x = 6 / 7.

3/7 = x/2
3 .... x
--- = ---
7 .... 2
you want to do what is called "cross multiply"....
3 * 2 = 7 * x... Do you see what I'm doing??
6 = 7x...
divide both sides by 7...
6/7 = x .... which is the same as x = 6/7

3 x
.... .....
7 2 , you do 3/7 x 2 = 0.857 (3dp), this is the same as cross multiplying, but easier.
