Keep in mind that a ban on alcohol has been tried, and with disasterous results.
Also, keep in mind that most of these student deaths are from alcohol obtained illegaly. (Have to be over 21 to legally drink.)

Banning it wouldn't do any good. Look at all the deaths each year related to illegal drugs. People will still get it if they want it. Moonshine is illegal (but I think now it is starting to become legal in a couple of states but is high regulated or something like that, I don't know, that's not where I live), but people still find it and drink it. I don't think it's an issue of legality. Rather it's an issue of how our sick society effects kids. Young people (and some never grow out of it) feel a strong sense of importance in fitting in and being popular and desired. Drinking like that is supposed to mean you are "the life of the party", "always fun to be around", etc. This is what these kids want. In fraternity hazing, too, it's done as a means of being accepted into that organization. Our kids need to be taught better. Popularity isn't worth losing your life. People get drunk beyond reason, they get stupid, and bad things happen.

Because it doesn't work. I'm not up on UK history that much, so I'm going to use the U.S. as an example. During prohibition a black market started and there really was not a way to enforce it, things got bad, crime increased, etc. If you expect the government to ban alcohol then you should expect them to ban all mind-altering materials. Also, ban vehicles as they cause deaths. The majority of people drink alcohol, the majority of people don't use magic mushrooms and cannabis. There's a large difference in this.

Drugs are illegal and look how easy they are to obtain. Banning does not work, the 21yr old drinking age does not work, abstinence education does not work, etc. etc. Until society as a whole changes itself no law or ban will stop people determined to do what they want to do. Take murder for instance the #1 illegal act, now look how many take place. Do you think someone is going to worry about making a little home brew?

I think we need to ban parents and schools patting children on the head and telling them the world owes them no matter what and start only allowing persons with some iota of personal accountability into college.
Funny -- I am in my 30's.....I didn't drink til I puked in college, there were no school shootings, and back when I was in school you could actually FAIL for not doing your work.....AND your parents would yell at YOU for it and not the teachers! (I know that sounds far fetched - but it really used to be like that.....we were responsible for our own actions and they had consequences!)

no, its 36 out of how many, thousands....yes, multiples of thousands.....they were being irresponsible, and without those deaths so many more teenagers would be irresponsible too, theres alot out there, but not all of them are irresponsible, and thats mainly due to the examples that are set for them, the less and less bad things that happen, the more and more kids are going to start drinking, yes, more than they already do, i drank almost everyday for a year or 2, it was fun, i didnt die, but i could have, many times, and i only stopped because of the examples ive seen, now i drink only once every couple months
