[Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said Tuesday that] demands in the U.S. Congress for a timeline to withdraw American troops from Iraq are constructive because they exert pressure on Iraq’s leaders to forge compromises.

“The debate in Congress … has been helpful in demonstrating to the Iraqis that American patience is limited,” Gates told Pentagon reporters traveling with him in Jordan. “The strong feelings expressed in the Congress about the timetable probably has had a positive impact … in terms of communicating to the Iraqis that this is not an open-ended commitment.”
Damn that democratic congress is doing the country some good afterall.

Don't you know they hate it when you provide facts instead of punditry.

That is certainly a positive spin on the shenanigans of the Democrats, even if the SecDef said it.

A more realistic statement would have been to say that the Democrat plans of abandoning them, similar to the Democrat abandonment of South Vietnam, is scaring the bejabbers out of them.

It is good that they now feel a sense of urgency about it. But one has to question the unseemliness of the Democrat actions and motives, regardless of the actual positive effect they've had on the Iraqi government. Because the Dems still mean to abandon Iraq.

Interesting point but if we cannot do it how do we expect the Iraqi government to take control? the point i'm making is that we should just move out now.
