He grew up in Virginia and North Carolina, so I think he feels a connection AND he was trying to get sympathy votes.

I say go for it. Every extra week you can buy for yourself on American Idol increases your chances of moving from only doing the American Idol tour to doing one of your own.

He was absolutely sincere! He does have friends there and I could here the emotion in his voice as it quivered. I think Simon was still arguing the whole "nasal singing" thing and didn't even know the conversation had changed, at least that is what he is claiming now. But, Chris was sincere, have we become so cynical that someone can't give sympathy with out criticism? I guarantee that if he hadn't said anything, he would have been accused of not caring about his home state and the tragedy they are going through.

No, I don't think he was. I think he was going to mention that he was sorry about the VT shootings even if the judges had given him good reviews. His home state is Virginia and he had friends that went there, so I'm sure he was sincere. It was just a very bad timing for him to say it. I'm pretty sure he didn't want sympathy votes for that.

I do...and THAT'S why Simon rolled his eyes! I have never liked Chris' singing and I can't figure out what anyone sees in him, he's not a good performer and that voice, give me a break. And of course, Sanjaya stunk too. I expected a little more from Chris and he just might be the one to go home tonight as I feel "certain" people are keeping Sanjaya there.
I realize he is from that area...but....

Maybe I`m just a cynic but it really seemed like it. Apparently Simon thought so too from the expression on his face. I was also glad that Simon told Melinda not to pull the "Gee, do you really like my singing?" look. It`s about time!

I doubt it, he is from Virginia. I thought it was thoughtful of him to say, especially when you realize how trivial American Idol is compared to the tragedy that happened. Simon rolling his eyes was very uncool though.

The way he brought it up was rather tacky, I thought...he waited until AFTER he received criticism from the judges. Even if he grew up there, it just kind of seemed like he was trying to take the judges' minds off his lackluster performance.

I don't think so. I thought he was from Virginia. It's been an emotional few days for everyone.
