Now I know its possible for the government to filter and or listen to our phone calls so wouldn't it also be possible to moniter our AIM conversations as well. The police have told our school that it is possible that any threats made on AIM can be brought back for their records for like online threat evidence in court cases. My friend's mom is a cop too and she told him that the local police station filters our conversations for bad words to help aid in their crime fighting. Is this just paranoia or has the patriot act realy taken over all means of communication?

No, generally speaking, it is not. If they are tipped off to something they will "listen in" on individual conversations between particular persons of interest. However, it's costly.
