Unfortunately, witches, and witchcraft have been regarded as an easy scapegoat for superstition and misfortune throughout history. A lot of people who practiced early medicine, herbalists and even midwives were accused of practicing witchcraft. The keepers of knowledge and traditions within an oral society were also branded within the occult mantle, because through knowledge comes power. The crusaders of the first three crusades, regarded the medical practices of Islam, not as superior, but as witchcraft.

Hollywood and the rise of neo-paganism, has given what is generally regarded as the occult, a public face. Wicca is a good example of this. With wiccans, as with any other group of people, you have the good and the bad. The good ones, go about their business quietly and sincerely, the bad ones tout a "Belief System" possibly inferring that anyone practicing the old craft as a solitary or non-wiccan and that does not fit into this "Belief system" are not genuine. Unfortunately, because these people emphasize a belief system, or a collective belief, history in a hundred years or so, may regard the Wicca phenomena, as merely christianity under a tree. Amongst the garbage that has been written under the auspices of Wicca, there are some very good books on what wicca is all about. (Phyllis Curott gives a great basic outline of the role of Wicca in the world of magic). Neo-paganism as with any other collective group, has its crackpots, charletans and wannabes. Its a bit like Christians and Sunday Christians, if you know what I mean. However if you meet a real witch, you probably won't know it. If you get to know a real witch, then you will certainly know it, who knows, it might even change your views. I cannot help but wonder, if, when we all meet in another world, and there are Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddists and god forbid yes even Pagans, Wiccans and Witches, we might all realise that the original essence or spirit of what we all believed was actually not too dis-similar, just under different mantles. And if we would have spent less time inflating our ego's through espousing what we believed in, and had got on better, or were more tolerant, then the world would have been a better place, and that is true magic.....

If you do not know that answer then I think it would be best if you did a little research into what exactly being a witch is about . And that in turn will answer your question. The subject of witches most usually finds hardly anyone who knows what they are talking about as is shown by some of the answers here. Instead of confusing an already misunderstood practice just do the research please. Many very good sites. I know of a witch who is also a mensa member. Yes even a smart witch.

Yes, there are witches around.
I am Pecti-Witan (aka Hedge Witch, not Wiccan) a "solitary" practitioner of "the Old Religion", and have been for many, many years. Being a "Witch" is nothing like what is portrayed in movies or on Television. There is nothing flashy about it. we are fairly simple people with "abilities" that everyone has, ours are just honed and utilized. Lots of research and practice. There is a lot to learn when you are dealing with herbal, mineral and candle magick.
I read tarot cards, rune stones and utilize a number of other tools for divination but would NEVER charge anyone for anything I do! Besides, I do not do "readings" or "cast spells" for others on demand. That sounds more like a con game to me!
Good or bad? what do you think.
We don't recognize the existance of demons or the devil, so how could we worship something that isn't? Evil exists, that is a given, but it is of MAN not of nature. Doing anything even remotely evil goes against our principles. We do our best for humanity and the environment. If we were being influenced or led by the devil, why would he teach us how to use healing herbs and why would he want us to advocate saving the earth? Why would he want us to use our very being to help others? Doesn't that sound more like of "God" than of "Satan"? Can we be so mislead that we spend our entire lives doing good things for people & nature and helping in any way that we can that we are actually doing the work of the "devil"?!? Get real.

Ummmmmmmmm yeah, there are practicing witches in the world today. It is not the kinds of witches that you see on the movies, the ones that do all the magic and crap. It is a religion.

The link above describes all the types of witches. Check it out and you will see what I mean. Wiccan is the most popular today, I believe.

There are mystics around that can do the things associated with the common image of "witches". Then there are those who are Wiccan, which is a belief system, not a skill indication.

yes it is, I am one. I practice Wicca and forms of the OLD religion. We are peaceful and live day to day lives like anyone else. Just the old stigma still around from the times when people who held on to the religion, while having Christianity forced on them, were deemed evil and killed.
