These cameras are not all over the place. If there was no cameras, this might be an issue to do for enhancing security.

True, you cannot stop someone who is irrational and determined from acting out, but you can mitigate the damage they might cause. This was not the Oklahoma City bombing, almost nothing could have stopped that. This guy moved from room to room with two hand guns. I think real-time security cameras (if they are accessible by law enforcement agencies) could go a long way in mitigating the death toll that happened at VT. One camera phone video clearly showed officers still standing outside as this tragedy unfolded, and there are many eyewitness accounts I heard on NPR indicating that the gunman had been in the building for up to 45 minutes before terminating his own life. I think the reason police officers were hesitant to storm the building was that they were blind as to who the perpetrator might have been. God forbid that the police accidentally shot/killed an innocent victim trying to flee to safety. There should be a centralized point on campus that can access any monitoring system there is so that law enforcement knows exactly who they are looking for so that they can act quickly and decisively. This technology is commercially available, it is just a matter of integration, priority, and motivation. Hopefully, we are all now motivated to minimize such a tragedy like this again.

Security cameras would be of little use saving lives. All it would do is possibly provide video of the assault but it certainly would not have stopped it. Besides, most security cameras only go to tape. Until someone reviews the tape would they see anything. As far a monitoring cameras, well, the campus is the size of many cities. How many people would you dedicate to the thousands of cameras you would need to see every place? What good would it do when the killer is on a suicide mission? It certainly would not deter him.

Security cameras are only of value against people who fear getting caught.
