NOT THAT IT IS AN EXCUSE! The VA Tech guy was a loner. Shock, huh? I know he was probally teased growing up especially since he was foreign. I don't think there were many Asian kids in his childhood schools. They probably made fun of his slanty eyes and he may have had an accent that kids thought sounded funny. I bet rarely anyone went out of there way to include him like ask him if he'd like to play ball, sit with them at lunch, and other normal things like that. People probably called him names. I know this because I was a loner. I was very preety and had cool clothes and came from a rich family but I had a nervous condition that made me shake all the time, I sucked at sports and was painfully shy. People were merciless. However, it just made me suicidal not homicidal. I THINK TEACHERS REALLY NEED TO START TELLING KIDS THAT THEY NEED TO QUIT MAKING FUN OF KIDS BECAUSE NOT ONLY IS IT CRUEL BUT THEY COULD CAUSE SOMEONE TO ACTUALLY KILL THEMSELF BECAUSE (cont'd)

THEY FEEL WORTHLESS AND THEY COULD POSSIBLY MAKE SOMEONE WANT TO GET REVENGE AND HURT THEM BADLY. FACULTY NEEDS TO EXPLAIN MOST OF THESE SCHOOL SHOOTERS WERE BULLIED. THEY ALSO NEED TO EXPLAIN HOW MUCH IT HURTS TO BE TEASED. THEY SHOULD HAVE SPECIAL CLASSES ON BEING KIND. THEY CAN EXPLAIN THAT NO ONE IS PERFECT! THEY SHOULD HAVE THEM WRITE DOWN THINGS THAT THEY DON'T LIKE ABOUT THEMSELVES AND HOW THEY'D FEEL IF SOMEONE CONSTANTLY TEASED THEM ABOUT IT. THEY NEED TO WATCH SPECIALS ON BULLYING. INVITE FORMER "NERDS" AND "LONERS" THAT ARE NOW EITHER BEAUTIFUL, RICH, ETC... THESE PEOPLE CAN TELL THE STUDENTS HOW MUCH THEY WERE HURT GROWING UP. THEY SHOULD ALSO HAVE PARENTS COME IN WHO HAVE LOST THEIR KIDS TO SUICIDE BECAUSE THEY COULDN'T DEAL WITH THE TEASING AND BULLYING ANYMORE. YES, KIDS WILL STILL BE LITTLE ******* AND TEASE BUT I BET SOME KIDS WILL HAVE A CHANGE OF HEART! THIS MAY PREVENT FUTURE MURDERS AND SUICIDES LIKE THE VA TECH KILLINGS!

I am so with you right now. My oldest son is SUCH a bully to his younger brother - not to a lot to school kids. I really predict that one day my youngest son is going to snap under the pressure and I can see the ticking time bomb in him now. As a parent I do everything possible to assure that won't happen and his counseling sessions seem to help.

As for myself, I listened this morning to what the VA Tech kid went through, and what his life was like. No one likes being singled out, made fun of and talked about behind their back. It makes you realize that the unkind word you say today can have a phenomenal impact on another person tomorrow. Teachers are right on the frontline - why don't they make more strides to combat this early on? I've actually seen teachers join in making fun of kids for awkwardness, etc.

Personal experience: At one point in my life I endured a racist employer - she felt superior to all other races and constantly made my life hell and loved to talk about people behind their backs. I was enraged for the longest time but, as most people do, I let it go and gave it to God to release me of the deep anger I had for this person. She ended up with breast cancer, and I hope that gave her a new perspective on life. She brought on her own fate and bad karma.

Every day we need to perform at least one act of kindness and always, always, always root for the underdog. Life isn't about wearing the most expensive clothes, driving the most pimped out car and living in a ridiculously expensive house. I love the song lyrics by Jewel: "In the end, only kindness matters...."

Blessings to you and thank you for the wonderful thoughts.

That's laying it on pretty thick I'd say. No matter what teachers tell kids, they are not going to quit picking on other kids. That's a fact of life. I was picked on quite a bit as a kid, the difference is I had a Dad who helped me out. He told me not to worry about what other people said about me. As long as I was happy with the way I was that's all that counted.
There is no excuse for what this guy did, there is also no one or nothing to blame except the shooter himself. I don't understand why everyone feels the need to find someone or something else to blame here. I was simply a sick act of evil perpetrated by a deranged individual. No one could have stopped it and no one can stop the next one. That's just the way it is.

I hold a system responsible, that sees a person that is obviously disturbed and yet no one can do anything to stop it until they kill someone. In this case the professor tried to get him help and the other students were of many races. It doesn't sound as if he was bullied at all, just in need of serious mental help.

You really hit a nerve, here.

These are excellent points. I am amazed at how much cruelty that teachers ignore, tolerate, and even encourage. American schools are horrible places for far too many of the students that attend.

No one should face a meat grinder every day. Empathy can be learned, and everyone who isolated that young man bears some responsibility for what he did.

No. At some point people have to be responsible for thier own actions and stop playing the victim card everytime they can't control thier emotions.
