Experiments were conducted changing elements of the Bayer Process and it was found that 4M LiOH produced a greater yield than using caustic soda (NaOH). In the LiOH, there was a ppt before neutralisation...was this hydrated alumina, or another lithium ppt which contaminated the experiment? Is this why LiOH isn't used? Does cost factor greatly too? It was also found that KOH produced a slightly greater yield too. Any ideas??

NaOH is cheaper, also its conductivity is higher.

NaOH is probably cheaper and the waste is probably easier to dispose of.
