Having both traits would be ideal. However, if you can only choose one of these two traits, which one would you want your spouse to have and why?

I would want kindness because my first husband was abusive.

Kindness. You can have any level of intelligence and be kind, and I think it takes more effort to be kind in some circumstances.

Some people that I know who are very intelligent are also very caustic in the way they deal with people. In some cases, they have no idea they are making inappropriate comments or hurting people's feelings. They may be intelligent, but they are clueless when dealing with people. Of course, they think they are just the nicest and greatest people on earth, but that is really only in their own little world.

Yes, it would be best to have a combination of both intelligence and kindness... and I think everyone does, but each only to a certain extent. If I have to choose only 1 it would be kindness.

Put this question in 1 example:

One girl tripped down on a road. You are in a rush to your office. If you were there, what will you do?

1. Intelligence - Would you run away, expecting the girl to get up herself? Or after inspecting her situation, you think that she will be ok by her own so you leave? Or let us think as someone rich, "I" perhaps will send someone to help her get up.

2. Kindness - If i am kind, i'm willing to help and be kind to send her to nearest hospital for treatment.

Different qualities bring different endings.

It is just cannt be compared from one to the another.

Obviously.

Intelligence is the primary development that has allowed humanity to take over the world.
What has kindness ever achieved but to get its user killed? You'll notice that most of the "kind" people remembered throughout history died as martyrs.

You'll also notice by the way people respond that they would prefer for OTHERS to be kind.
I have yet to see a single person saying they would rather be kind themselves.

And why is that?
Because they want to EXPLOIT that kindness...

For that is the only purpose it serves. Kindness exists to be exploited.... and I have no need for it.

This world needs Intelligence and Fairness. To be kind is often to be unjust... and ultimately to be doomed. To be fair however is something that no reasonable person can argue with (and unreasonable people get their comeuppance).

Even kindness has to be backed by intelligence, or else the results would not be as desired.

Intelligence in the true sense must lead to kindness, because kindness results in bumper returns in terms of our own self-esteem and happiness.

I really think that if a person were truely intelligent then they would also be kind. It goes that way, but if one is kind, it does not mean they are intelligent. I would at least want kindness. Intelligent would be a great thing too because then you can have true conversations about things that matter. It would be great to be intelligent b/c they would also be kind.

Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex... It takes a touch of genius - and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.......Albert Einstein.

Courage is knowing what not to fear......Plato.

Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love....Lao Tzu.

By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest....Confucius.

Good luck!

The answer to this interesting question is not a simple one for me...Namely, if I want my descendants to be able and fit for life, they should be intelligent, shouldn't they ?! Kindness is a nice word, but in practice it usually means hypocrisy or an expression of personal weakness...Life is not for feeble, it's meant for strong ones, that's why I'd prefer a mother to my children to be intelligent !

I would go for the kind person because many intelligent people make use of their intelligence in a bad way. Like using it to cheat other people.

I wouldn't settle for one or the other. I feel that MY spouse should have both. I don't settle for anything but what I want. :)
In general terms though, kindness is probably better.
