All schools have a 1000 foot gun free zone that all law abiding people must observe. Criminals don't care about laws so he just went ahead and broke it. When guns are illegal and gun laws make it impossible for people to buy them only criminals will have them.

Many people carry concealed weapons everyday without shooting each other. I myself carry a concealed Glock 45 nearly all the time. I am an honest citizen and will not murder people even if I get into an argument (as suggested above). But honest citizens are not the ones causing these problems. If someone is willing to murder they are also likely to willingly buy a gun illegally. Just my guess.

illegal guns are easier to get than legal guns. Its kinda like pot, and other drugs. They are illegal but easy to get. For most teens it is easier to get drugs because they are illegal (dealers don't ask for IDs) Alcohol is more difficult to get for the teen than drugs because there are restrictions. Just like guns.

Things would be different if the laws would encourage self protection instead of waiting for the government to protect you.

For example, If I (or you) where allowed to carry on an airplane on 9/11 or on campus at VT this would have ended a lot differently. The killers would still be dead but the rest of the people would be alive.

As an x-police officer I can tell you that the police WILL NOT protect you. If you choose to not protect yourself you are sheep to the wolves.

As a police officer it was my job to write a report about the crime scene or actually spend my time rasing mony for the city by writing traffic tickets. We never where around to save the victim from theft, rape, or murder. We just wrote a report and told folks they will likely never see their stereo again. Or sorry your wife was raped and murdered by the intruder; good luck next time.

My opinion is protect yourself or be a report.
For those who choose to be sheep it is your choice but when the big bad wolf shows up don’t be surprised if you are a victim. Baaa

As with all laws, it's only illegal if you get caught.

If guns were much harder to buy, it would mean he would have to have planned this much more thouroughly than might otherwise be so. It is perfectly possible that he already had the gun on campus and had done for quite some time - perhaps for protection or something; and then just decided on a whim to use it. If it was impossible to buy guns legally then he would have had to go to a criminal gang and buy one - something which is much harder to do than just walk into a shop. This would mean he would have to have planned it - something which is more unlikely - though of course not impossible.

Banning guns won't stop gun crime, it will only reduce it. Saying only criminals will have guns is true, but many people don't BECOME criminals until they have a gun. Having laws saying anyone can own a gun legitimises criminals owning them and didn't stop anyone using their gun (which they're legally allowed to have) to stop him.

well, technically your not a criminal unless you have been in jail, or I should say caught in the act of something criminal for which trial was held and the result was a guilty one.
(Innocent' until prove guilty)
but yeah you are right it does not matter what laws exist they are just there as a deterrent, basically it just letting you know it's illegal and that there will be consequences if broken, but is not going to stop you from doing it, that's where the individuals state of mind comes into play, If he does not gives a rats patui, then he or she is going to do the criminal act regardless. Specially when it comes to mentally unstable people. The funny things is that laws don't apply as easily towards mentally unstable individuals as they do to mentally stable ones.
There for the rule that if someone is insane and he does not know what he did is wrong then he or she can't be punish for the crime, unless he can differentiate from right and wrong, if they can't then is a mental institution for you.
Even, in lots of cases you can claim temporary insanity unless you can prove that it was a plan intent to do the crime.
anyways I'm going off the subject. I hope it helps clear your mind it probably did not but I think you were just commenting instead of looking for an answer.

I agree with your point of view but am having trouble finding your actual question. Yes, he was a criminal once he brought the gun on campus and thereby broke the law. But remember you're innocent until proven guilty.

If Virginia had passed the bill that would've allowed students that had CCW permits to carry concealed, this massacre might not have happened on such a level.

Yes, the only people who are affected by restrictive gun laws are the honest people who will obey them. These laws fail citizens in that they leave us defenseless against criminals. If honest people had the advantage and were permitted to carry there, there would be a good chance that so many people would not have been slaughtered by the one person who didn't "play be the rules".

And I am tired of the arguement "well, thats what police are for, regular people shouldn't take the law into their own hands." - THE POLICE FAILED. 32 GOOD PEOPLE DIED. I AM NOT PUTTING MY SAFETY AND MY LIFE IN SOMEONE ELSE'S HANDS. A gun has a much better chance of saving your life than a cell phone with a cop on the other end.

He wasn't a criminal when he bought the weapons.

And the NRA would argue that he was not a criminal when he brought the guns onto campus because he has not been convicted of it.

Most people who murder someone are not criminals until the moment they kill.

the two present day college shootings do no longer unavoidably strengthen or weaken the argument for US gun administration. On one hand, there is the cry of "OH NO SEE WHAT weapons DO!" on the different hand "damn, IF in ordinary terms human beings have been ALLOWED to hold! & CRIMINALS do no longer OBEY THE regulation!" that's not a sparkling decrease persuasion. the three issues that the two shooters had hassle-unfastened have been: a million) the two mentally sick 2) the two made purchases from the comparable broker 3) the two killed themselves If there have been people who had their ccw enable and have been wearing on those days, ought to they have prevented lives from being loss? possibly, relies upon if the the guy(s) have been keen to threat their very own protection. on the different hand the two assaults have been performed by skill of people with psychological ailment who got here approximately to attend the college. no longer a serial killer searching for yet another kill. in my opinion, this in ordinary terms makes, for me, a sturdy case for ccw with sturdy historical past examine of all varieties and with semi-annual qualification on the weapon. extremely, make it complicated, no longer impossible to get the enable. complicated adequate to weed out people who choose it to look "cool" yet obtainable for people who could be in charge with it. 0.33 determination could to have extra beneficial armed patrol on campus 24/7. regrettably that costs $$ and then th campus could look almost like a protection stress state. no longer in ordinary terms that, yet to a pair which may be an extra quantity of rigidity. The consistent reminder that a gunman can appear and reason havoc. there is not any uncomplicated answer. the two one demands sacrifice. Gun unfastened Zones are a super concept, regrettably that's purely an concept. It in ordinary terms works for people who % to obey it.

Do you know how many arguments have gone out of control and turned into a fight? Even on that campus, alot probably happened. Now imagine that all those enraged kids have a loaded weapon in their hands or pockets. What then, do you think they wouldn't use it?
