i work in a small venue and have worked there for about 12 months, we have had a new boss and he has come in with all these new insentives and one of them is that we all have to wear black clothes, including work shoes i.e. lether flat bottom shoes. but has made all the staff members buy there own black clothes from shops like bhs and topman, i was hoping somone could verify that this is wrong and that they should be surplying us with money for uniforms or surplying the uniforms themselves.

No, sorry, this isn't wrong. People in the business world have to wear suits, but the company isn't responsible for buying them their suits, are they? Part of having a job is looking the part and that is your responsibility.

if there is a designated uniform in the u.s. you sign a contract prior to employment agreeing to the terms and secondly the costs come out of your pay. for instance airline pilots, flight attendants. This is stipulated before hand. So technically you boss has the right to enforce a dress code but he does not have the right to tell you what specific brands to buy and where to shop. If that's the case he needs to have u sign a contract agreeing to this and the funds will be deducted from your pay. he would be responsible for supplying the uniform and arranging the costs, etc.

It is pretty standard to make employees buy their own uniforms. I mean, you have to wear clothes anyway, so why does it matter if you have to wear specific clothes.

I think you shouldn't have to pay. If the boss wants you to have something for work, he is the one who should provide you with it.
