There are many reasons people watch horror movies. Horror movies are a release for people. They often have political or social themes that say much about our society and our fears. Watch "Night of the Living Dead" while keeping that in mind. Sometimes they are just good scary mindless fun. Like a roller coaster, extreme sports, etc.

Horror films are a variety of suspense, terror and entertainment. Horror films back in the 20's like Nosferatu, phantom of the opera and Dr Moreau were not as gory as today. Today we've got hellraiser, Freddy and Jason. The three winners of horror. The purpose of horror films is the look of the film, the atmosphere of the film and the suspense of the film. Horror is all about those three things.

well horror films are meant to scare people and stretch their imagination, and entertain people most of all. I'm not scared of them, I find that they are mainly for my own entertainment.

horror films are made for mad teenagers who think they are to old to watch comdeys and go to watch a horror film just to make-out with there bf/gf or to be cool

they used to be for entertainment, but now theyve realised thats what people enjoy (being scared) one comes out every week. sadly (or funnily enough), almost all the hollywood movies that come out now are pure rubbish and not frightening at all. zzzz.
