They opposed the small pox vaccine. They opposed Galileo's discoveries. They opposed evolution theory....these are all bad to oppose and the list goes on. Modern Christians I assume would agree that it was bad to oppose the above examples. Yet modern Christians are up to their same old tricks as their ancestors and are opposing stem cell research and genetic engineering. Who's to say that future generations of Christians won't look back at today's Christians and bow their heads in shame?

Oh, Sorry! -- the churches collaborated, didn't they?

The problem is that Christianity is known for everything it is opposed to rather than anything it is in favor of. I don't know how many Christians, (not the leaders, but among the general population) opposed Galileo, but don't believe the majority of us today are opposed to stem cell research. I know I am not. I think the President is among a small minority. Like the Dixie Chicks, I already am ashamed of Him.

Sure. Christians oppose OTHER CHRISTIANS for their misuse of power. You have heard of Martin Luther, Hus, Calvin, Zwingli?

And if I recall well, wasn't Oliver Cromwell the one who fought in the British Parliament to end slavery and the slave trade from Africa (back in the 1830's)?

They also opposed *lighning rods* as thwarting "god's will" (or god swill if you prefer). You just can't depend on religious "reasoning" to arrive at sensible positions, because faith hobbles their intellect. They may rightly oppose some things by accident, but not by design ;>)
