Jake, the Bible, in narrating certain events, tend only to focus on "spotlight events." This is why there are many unanswered questions in the Bible. You also have to take into consideration that these were ancient texts that have been translated to English. The key word here is "ancient." Following on this line of reasoning, just imagine if you were to zap an ancient man and bring him to our times. He would certainly find our times intimidating, baffling and very mysterious. One of the problems that this ancient man will encounter is that he can't explain his surroundings. That is what happened in the Bible narrations. The Bible tends to narrate things in the most simple way, eliminating certain complexities, and thus leaving some serious plotholes. So to answer your question, we have three different leads:

1. The Bible says that Adam and Eve begat Cain and Abel, and yet logic behooves us to ask, "Are these their only two offsprings?" Adam and Eve lived for hundreds of years, it's just impossible to think that Abel and Cain were their only two children.
2. Nowhere does the Bible state that Adam and Eve were the only two homosapiens on Earth when they were created. There could have been other "men" that were not as "updated" as Adam and Eve were. Remember that God has been in this creation business for billions of years even before A & E were created.
3. Adam and Eve could be a symbol for an actual group of people.

Genesis 4:17 says, "Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch." Who was his wife? It is implied in the biblical text that Cain married one of his sisters. Several facts lead us to this conclusion.
First, it is clear that Adam and Eve had a number of children. Genesis 5:4 says, "After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters." Since Adam and Eve were the first man and woman, and since God had commanded them (and their descendants) to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:28), it seems reasonable to conclude that Cain married one of his many sisters. It is also possible that he married a niece or even a grandniece.
One must keep in mind that in the early years of the human race there were no genetic defects that had yet developed as a result of the fall of man. By the time of Abraham, God had not yet declared this kind of marriage to be contrary to His will (see Genesis 20:12). Laws governing incest apparently did not become enacted until the time of Moses (Lev 18:7-17; 20:11,12,14,17,20,21). Hence, there was no prohibition regarding marrying a sister (or niece or grandniece) in the days of Cain.

Cain and Abel were the first two children of Adam and Eve. They lived hundreds of years in that day and marrying a sister, brother or even a daughter and father was permissable then. Remember Job fathered a child with his daughter after his wife was turned into a pillar of salt!

Adam and Eve were the first to be created and the point of the geneology is to follow that line through to Christ Jesus. Others were also created to provide a spouse for Cain until the earth could be populated. There were all kinds of different tribes created, initially.

God sent us on our way thorugh the merry process of evolution. Eventually we reached a point where we had deveoloped enought to have a "soul" ( self awarness in a meaningful sense, moral standing, etc) the first two that deveoped this were Adam and Eve. Able might just have done the nasty with those who were physicall human without yet possesing the degree of mental refinement to be considered to have "souls" and to be worthy of moral consideration. ( Come on you know there are still some of those left around).
While I put forth this theory clumsily, it is pretty clear that if christians would abandon the inerrent, literalist position, they could do a better god of reconciling the world with their stories.

There weren't only four people on earth. Adam and Eve had other sons and daughters (Genesis 5:4).

there were people on this earth at that time, who were not of the line of Adam and Eve. They are from a different religion as we see it these days, they would have kidnapped someone who was not of the faith and converted them to their leaf wearing ways and had children.

Because there were more people.

If there were so few people in the beginning, our gene pool would be completely riddled with birth defects because of MASSIVE inbreeding.

EDIT: And to clarify, you sir are an imbecile for believing this idiocy. Try thinking once in awhile.
