NO - they cannot throw a person in jail for not paying their credit cards. (or have them arrested for not paying)

Threatening people with jail is a favorite tactic by collection agencies. Threats by a collection agency is illegal and if a person can prove it, that person can sue the collection agency for up to $1000.

I know the credit card companies can charge you with theft by fraud and have you arrested but I don't know what the penalties are. Probably depends on the amount you owe.
