I know stress induces hyperglycemia. How does acute infection cause hyperglycemia?

Infection causes it in a similar way to how stress induces hyperglycaemia.

Infection / stress / inflammation / etc activates the body's stress response.

The adrenal glands release glucocorticoids as well as catacholamines.

The cortisol released causes:
- elevated blood sugars
- increased amino acids in the blood
- mobilization of white blood cells

all a sort of "make things available for repair and patch up" process
