Take for instance a typical cell phone battery, or iPod internal battery...Would charging it when it is already full (for every night/every other night) shorten the battery's life or weaken it in any way?

Lithium batteries are not designed to be charged constantly like Ni-cads or Nimh batteries. However, lithium batteries also do not suffer from the memory effect that Ni-cads do. Like all other rechargeable batteries Lithium batteries have a finite amount of charge/discharge cycles. What is different with Lithium batteries is that a partial discharge then charge is only counted as a percentage of a charge/discharge cycle. Thus if you ran it down to 80% of full charge and then charged it up it would count as 20% of one charge/discharge cycle. What people have found is that discharging a lithium battery fully actually shortens the life of the battery.

Here are two sites that talk about lithium batteries....

Constant charging is not good for any battery. That is why most people leave their laptop plugged in, and after a year or so, they go with battery, and find the thing goes dead in short time.!! It is always good to 'cycle' a battery to keep it in good shape.
