Alcohol will intensify the effects of drowsiness. It will also cause dizziness. If you are taking Ativan due to seizures, you run the risk of precipitating seizures. In some people, the combination of ativan and alcohol can even be fatal.

It is never wise to mix alcohol with any medication.

It depends on the dose of ativan and your tolerance levels to ativan and your tolerance levels to alcohol. It will also depend on the amount of alcohol. If you take a large amount of alcohol and also wash an ativan or two you increase your risk of intoxication and doing things you will regret and overdose such as respiratory depression and the increaed risk of choking on your own vomit.
I would also like to point out that if you are a regular user of ativan that stopping it abruptly can lead to seizures which may be life threatening and panic attacks and potentially a psychotic episode.
The above nurse wrote that if you have seizure disorder you may be at risk of seizures. She is not correct. You DO NOT have to have an underlying seizure disorder to suffer withdrawal seizures coming off sedative hypnotic drugs or alcohol etc. Anyone has the potential to have withdrawal seizures coming off alcohol, benzodiazepines such as ativan, barbiturates. It depends on the dosage and the individual etc.
If you are dependent on lorazepam (ativan) I can recommend this support group to help stop your lorazepam http://www.non-benzodiazepines.org.uk/
It is not an ideal drug to be taking long term. It can adversely affect the memory, emotions and personality of an individual etc.
