I don't see this costing $500 in any way. I would think more around the $150 to $200 range, and would probably take around 2 hours.
My husband just had this cat ( http://www.buruma.net/fanlists/cheshire/main.gif ) tattooed on his back in full color and it was $400 and took about 4-5 hours.
I've been to other places and the prices were comparable. (And all do excellent work). I think it may depend on where you live. I'm in North Carolina and things tend to be cheaper here than they do in other states (such as New York, etc) but I can't see paying 500 for a tattoo this size. That just seems unreasonable to me.

The best way to get a fair price range is to ask several artist in your area. Because it does vary a lot by region/artist, etc. how much a tattoo will cost.
Also, shop by artist, not by price. So go look at some different portfolios to see if that artist will be good at that kind of art. Some specialize in different types.
But yes, you are looking between 3 - 5 hours. Around here I pay by the hour - $120. Don't forget to tip....

My guess would be it would take at least 3 hours, price is tricky because every shop is different and every area is different, it could cost more depending on where you live. If I took that to my shop I would guess in the $400 range. I shopped around quite a bit before my first one but I ended up paying a little more at one shop, but liked the guys portfolio and the atmosphere more. So don't necessarily go for the cheapest price you can find, find a good artist that specializes in the style that you want.

Yeah that would take about 4-5 hours. My friend got a tattoo half that size and it took an hour and half, and with all the detail in that, it will take at least that long. And 500+ dollars is a very good estimate. But you should probably shop around, go to different tattoo parlors and get a quote.

It will vary depending on the artist and what part of the country you are located in. If your tattoo artist is published or well known, chances are they will do a better job, but their prices will be higher. You can take the picture in to a shop though and get an estimate. Then you can shop for an artist and a price.

there is really no way to tell you how much it will cost because so many factors come into play. firstly who your artist is. artists charge differently, mine charges by hour, some charge by size, some by tattoo difficulty. also how much an artist charges is largely based on their talent. someone who has only been tattooing for a couple of years and probably isn't as talented as a long time tattoo veteran so their prices would be much less. if i were getting that tattoo, done in that size in black and gray i would expect it to take 3-5 hours to do so my artist would charge $300-500.
